Nazi Germany

1933–1945

Nazi Germany began when Adolf Hitler became chancellor in 1933 and the Nazi regime rapidly dismantled democratic institutions. The dictatorship rested on propaganda, terror, racial ideology, militarisation and the destruction of political opposition.

The regime drove Germany into expansion, war and genocide. Its policies included persecution of Jews and other targeted groups, aggressive foreign policy, occupation regimes across Europe and the systematic murder later known as the Holocaust.

Nazi Germany is a major setting for historical and alternate-history fiction. Robert Harris’s Fatherland imagines the continuation of a victorious Nazi state, while Munich and V2 use the actual regime at different stages: diplomatic intimidation before war and technological desperation near its end.
