Zulu Hart

The George Hart novels follow a fictional soldier of mixed Irish and Zulu ancestry through the wars, politics and prejudices of the late Victorian Empire. George’s uncertain relationship with the British military establishment gives him access to power while his appearance and maternal heritage repeatedly expose the racism on which that establishment depends.

The sequence begins during the Anglo-Zulu War, moves into covert operations in Afghanistan and concludes in London during the Whitechapel murders. Each novel combines military adventure with questions of identity, class and imperial loyalty, while historical figures and documented events place Hart’s private conflicts inside the expansion and anxiety of late Victorian Britain.
