The Soldier’s Son

The Soldier’s Son follows Andrew Baird, son of Jack Windrush, as he tries to establish a military identity of his own in the late Victorian empire. The six novels connect two generations of Archibald’s military fiction while giving Andrew different problems from those faced by his father. Mounted warfare, intelligence work, colonial politics and personal relationships complicate each campaign, and recurring encounters with Boer and Asian opponents undermine simple assumptions about loyalty or imperial purpose.
