The Long War

The Long War follows Arimnestos of Plataea from the Ionian Revolt and slavery to the battles that decide the Persian invasions of Greece. Farmer, bronzesmith, hoplite, sailor and captain, he moves through Marathon, Salamis and Plataea while Greek cities struggle to cooperate against the Achaemenid Empire.

The sequence combines land and naval warfare with the social worlds that sustain them: workshops, slave markets, merchant routes, embassies and competing political systems. Arimnestos’s growing fame never erases the losses behind it, and the final novel turns from victory over Persia to the emerging rivalry between Athens and Sparta.
