Survivors of War

Survivors of War follows Zofia and the people drawn into her life as the Second World War spreads across eastern Europe and Asia. Last Train to Freedom begins in Lithuania in 1940, where escape depends on Japanese transit visas and a dangerous journey across the Soviet Union. The Enemy’s Wife moves the story to Japanese-occupied Shanghai, where marriage, friendship and national identity become increasingly difficult to separate from the demands of war.

The series focuses on civilians displaced by competing empires rather than on the familiar western European battlefield. Its recurring concerns are flight, divided loyalties and the moral compromises forced on ordinary people when borders, governments and allegiances change around them.
