Matthew Bartholomew

The Matthew Bartholomew chronicles follow a physician and teacher at Michaelhouse in fourteenth-century Cambridge. Beginning with the arrival of the Black Death in 1348, the series places Bartholomew and his formidable friend Brother Michael inside a university community divided by college rivalries, religious disputes, fragile civic authority and recurring violence between scholars and townspeople.

Bartholomew's practical approach to medicine repeatedly draws him into suspicious deaths, epidemics and alleged miracles. His investigations range beyond Cambridge to Ely, Lincoln, York, Peterborough and Suffolk, while the wider consequences of plague, labour shortage, war and social upheaval reshape the society around him. The mysteries combine medical detection with the institutional politics and everyday hazards of late medieval England.
