The Master of Gray Trilogy follows Patrick Gray, one of the most gifted and dangerous political operators of the later sixteenth century, and the daughter who inherits both his intelligence and his capacity for intrigue. Moving between the courts of Scotland and England, Patrick becomes involved in schemes surrounding Mary, Queen of Scots, Elizabeth I and the succession of James VI, using charm, diplomacy and betrayal with equal confidence.

The second and third novels carry the consequences of his ambition into the next generation. Mary Gray’s love for Ludovick, Duke of Lennox, conflicts with her father’s manoeuvres, religious division and the struggle to secure James VI’s path to the English throne. Across the trilogy, public policy repeatedly invades private life: marriages become alliances, affection becomes leverage and family loyalty is tested by competing faiths and crowns.
