Marcus Flavius Victor

The Marcus Flavius Victor sequence is set during the early fifth-century collapse of Roman authority in the West. Marcus, a veteran cavalry commander shaped by decades on Britain’s northern frontier, first undertakes a final and increasingly suspicious inspection of Hadrian’s Wall. He then leads a small company out of a fractured Britannia and across northern Europe in search of the Roman general Stilicho.

The two novels follow soldiers trying to decide what loyalty means when pay, command and imperial protection are failing. Frontier rivalries, civil conflict and large-scale migration turn former allies into competitors for survival, while Marcus’s attempts to preserve his men and family draw him into struggles involving Honorius, Stilicho and the armies moving towards Italy.
