Leonora Trilogy

The Leonora trilogy follows Leonora Malham Brown and Victoria Langford from the First Balkan War into the First World War. Their decision to join women’s medical organisations challenges the social expectation that respectable women should remain away from battle. Nursing in Bulgaria, France, Serbia and Salonika exposes them to disease, retreat, bombardment and the practical limits placed on female volunteers.

Leonora’s relationship with Serbian Colonel Sasha Malkovic develops beside the experiences of her brother Ralph and fiancé Tom, whose own love cannot be openly acknowledged. The three original novels were later republished under Hilary Green’s Holly Green pen name as Frontline Nurses, Frontline Nurses On Duty and Secrets of the Frontline Nurses. The original titles and work dates are retained here, with the later titles recorded as alternatives.
