Jack Windrush

The Jack Windrush series follows a Victorian army officer from the Second Anglo-Burmese War through the Crimea, the Indian Rebellion, frontier campaigns, West Africa, Afghanistan, Egypt and the Sudan. Beginning as an ambitious young lieutenant in the disregarded 113th Foot, Windrush becomes an experienced commander increasingly sceptical of the political assumptions behind imperial warfare.

Across twelve novels, the series combines campaign history with regimental continuity, espionage and family relationships. Battles and marches are shown through officers, ordinary soldiers, local allies and opponents, while the recurring tension between duty and conscience allows the books to question military glory, racial hierarchy and the human cost of Britain’s nineteenth-century expansion.
