Follies

The Follies series follows Rose Taylor, Richard Stephens, Merry and Felix from a seaside variety theatre into the Second World War. Their professional skills lead Rose and Richard into troop entertainment and clandestine work, Felix into the RAF and Merry into military music. The friendships and romantic attachments created backstage must survive separation, injury and the demand to perform confidence for audiences facing danger.

Across four novels, the action moves from the outbreak of war and the Blitz through Dunkirk, occupied France, North Africa, Italy and the liberation of western Europe. Merry and Felix’s relationship gives the saga a continuing queer love story shaped by the period’s restrictions, while Rose and Richard repeatedly discover that affection does not remove the obligations of service. The final volume carries the survivors into peace without erasing wartime loss.
