Borderlands

The Borderlands trilogy follows Faustus Valerianus, the son of a Roman veteran and a British woman enslaved during Claudius’s conquest. Beginning with Agricola’s northern campaigns, Faustus attempts to build a Roman military identity while the communities being subdued include his mother’s people. His attachment to Constantia, responsibility for his sister Silvia and encounters with his father’s ghost make the empire’s political frontier a division inside his family.

Shadow of the Eagle culminates at Mons Graupius; Empire’s Edge sends Faustus to Hibernia with the exiled prince Tuathal Techtmar after Agricola’s recall; and Birds of Prey brings him back to western Britain as the Silures prepare renewed resistance. The trilogy balances Roman expansion with native perspectives and treats loyalty as a continuing negotiation rather than a choice Faustus can settle once and for all.
