William Grant, Lord Prestongrange was a Scottish advocate, politician and judge who served as Lord Advocate from 1746 to 1754. As Lord Advocate he prosecuted James Stewart of the Glen after the Appin Murder and helped implement post-Jacobite legal and estate reforms.
Catriona portrays Prestongrange as the powerful official who controls whether David Balfour can testify in the Appin case. Grant’s office and prosecution of James Stewart are historical. Stevenson invents his extended relationship with David and the manoeuvres used to prevent David’s testimony.
