Philip II ruled Spain from 1556 to 1598 and governed a global composite monarchy including Iberian kingdoms, territories in Italy and the Low Countries and vast American possessions. He married Mary I of England, fought the Ottoman Empire and France and attempted to suppress the Dutch Revolt. The failure of the Spanish Armada in 1588 became the most famous setback of his reign, though Spanish power remained formidable. His government relied on extensive paperwork and confessional Catholic purpose.
Philip appears in Ken Follett’s A Column of Fire and in Philippa Gregory’s The Queen’s Fool, as well as in many novels about Elizabeth I and the Armada. English fiction often casts him as a remote religious fanatic. More balanced portrayals show a ruler managing multiple legal systems, financial crises and distant wars from an intensely bureaucratic court.
In non-fiction, Philip II of Spain is discussed in Linda Porter’s Mary Tudor, Linda Porter’s The First Queen of England, and Antonia Fraser’s Mary Tudor. In Linda Porter’s Mary Tudor, the biography examines Mary’s marriage to Philip of Spain, Wyatt’s Rebellion, the loss of Calais and the restoration of Catholic worship, including the executions that created the enduring image of “Bloody Mary.” Porter does not remove responsibility for persecution.
