Mohammad Akbar Khan

1816–1845

Mohammad Akbar Khan was an Afghan prince and son of Dost Mohammad Khan who became a leading commander against the British occupation during the First Anglo-Afghan War. He negotiated during the retreat from Kabul, was involved in the killing of Sir William Macnaghten and later served as vizier after his father’s restoration.

In George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman, Flashman encounters Dost Mohammad Khan, Shah Shujah and Mohammad Akbar Khan as resistance to the occupation becomes open revolt.

In non-fiction, Mohammad Akbar Khan is discussed in William Dalrymple’s Return of a King. In William Dalrymple’s Return of a King, the occupation of Kabul depended on an unpopular ruler, uncertain intelligence and expensive political subsidies, while resistance gathered around Afghan leaders including Dost Mohammad Khan and Mohammad Akbar Khan.
