Moctezuma II

1466–1520

Moctezuma II was ruler of the Aztec Empire when Hernán Cortés reached central Mexico in 1519. He received the Spaniards in Tenochtitlan, was taken under their control and died during the uprising of 1520, with the exact circumstances of his death disputed.

In Gary Jennings’s Gary Jennings’ the 2012 Codex, Five centuries earlier, the slave-scholar Pacal undertakes a parallel search within the empire of Moctezuma II. In Manolo Palomares’s Hernán Cortés and the Conquest of Mexico, the narrative follows the encounter with Moctezuma II through the violence at Cholula and Tóxcatl, the retreat remembered as La Noche Triste and the final siege of Tenochtitlan. Other novels featuring Moctezuma II include Colin Falconer’s Feathered Serpent.
