Lozen

Lozen was a Chihenne Apache warrior, healer and spiritual figure, and the sister of the leader Victorio. She fought during Victorio’s campaigns and later joined groups associated with Nana and Geronimo. After the final surrender in 1886 she was held as a prisoner of war and died from tuberculosis while confined in Alabama.

Lozen is the central figure of Lucia St. Clair Robson’s Ghost Warrior, which presents Apache resistance through a woman whose military and spiritual authority was remembered by her own people. The novel expands a life preserved only in scattered accounts, using her relationships with Victorio and other Chiricahua leaders to show survival, mobility and the effects of imprisonment.
