Hürrem Sultan

c. 1505–1558

Hürrem entered the Ottoman imperial harem as an enslaved young woman and became the favoured consort of Suleiman I. Their legal marriage broke with established dynastic custom, and her sons became central to the succession politics of the sixteenth-century empire.

She maintained diplomatic correspondence and sponsored mosques, baths, charitable kitchens and other public works. Historical fiction frequently turns court hostility and succession conflict into direct conspiracy, but many accusations against Hürrem derive from hostile observers and later legend.
