Giuseppe Garibaldi
1807–1882
Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian nationalist soldier and revolutionary, central to the Risorgimento and the unification of Italy. His expedition of the Thousand in 1860 helped bring southern Italy into the new Italian kingdom.
Umberto Eco’s The Prague Cemetery places Giuseppe Garibaldi within a narrative shaped by family, marriage and personal loyalty, religion, belief and institutional authority, and political ambition and government.
