Duleep Singh I

1838–1893

Duleep Singh I was the last maharaja of the Sikh Empire. He inherited the throne as a child amid factional conflict, lost sovereignty after the Anglo-Sikh Wars and was removed to Britain, where his identity and claims remained politically charged.

In George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman and the Mountain of Light, he becomes entangled with Maharani Jind Kaur, the child ruler Duleep Singh and ministers whose rival plans alternately encourage and restrain war with the East India Company.

In non-fiction, Duleep Singh I is discussed in Amarpal Singh’s The First Anglo-Sikh War and Amarpal Singh’s The Second Anglo-Sikh War. In Amarpal Singh’s The First Anglo-Sikh War, the book explains the instability of the Lahore court, the power of the Khalsa army and the roles of Duleep Singh, Jind Kaur, Lal Singh and Tej Singh, while following Hugh Gough and Henry Hardinge as their forces advanced towards the Sutlej.
