Artabanus IV of Parthia

died 224 CE

Artabanus IV contested the Parthian throne before becoming the principal Arsacid ruler in the west. Caracalla attempted to exploit Parthian divisions and invaded in 216, but the Roman emperor was assassinated before a decisive settlement. Artabanus later fought Macrinus at Nisibis and extracted peace terms from Rome.

Emperor’s Fate places Artabanus at the far end of Caracalla’s final campaign. His resistance supplies the geopolitical pressure surrounding the emperor’s assassination and the accession of Macrinus.
