Historical person
Anne, Queen of Great Britain
Anne was queen of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1702 and became the first monarch of the newly created Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. Her reign encompassed the War of the Spanish Succession, intense party conflict and the political union of England and Scotland.
Anne suffered repeated pregnancies but left no surviving child, making the Protestant succession a central political issue. Her court and friendships, particularly with Sarah Churchill and Abigail Masham, have made her reign a frequent subject of historical fiction and drama.
