Reconquista

c. 711–1,492

The Reconquista is a broad term for the centuries-long struggle and coexistence between Christian and Muslim polities in the Iberian Peninsula. It included war, tribute, diplomacy, intermarriage, cultural exchange, internal rivalry, and shifting frontiers. The process ended symbolically with the fall of Granada in 1492.

This history matters because Iberia was not a simple battlefield between two fixed sides. Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities lived in complex patterns of cooperation and conflict, while kingdoms such as Castile, Aragon, León, Navarre, Portugal, and Granada pursued their own interests. The frontier produced warriors, scholars, merchants, translators, and exiles.

Tariq Ali’s Islam Quintet, Noah Gordon’s The Last Jew for the later aftermath, and novels about El Cid or medieval Spain fit this broad setting. Reconquista fiction suits border captains, mixed courts, translators, physicians, poets, sieges, and families living between cultures.
