Medieval Venice grew from lagoon communities into a major maritime republic. Its wealth came from trade, shipbuilding, diplomacy, and control of routes linking the Adriatic, Byzantium, the Levant, and western Europe. Venice became especially powerful through commerce and through its role in the Fourth Crusade and eastern Mediterranean politics.
