Fall of Constantinople

The Fall of Constantinople took place in 1453 when Sultan Mehmed II captured the Byzantine capital after a major siege. The city had once been the centre of a vast empire, but by the fifteenth century Byzantine power was greatly reduced. Its fall ended the Byzantine Empire and confirmed Ottoman dominance in the eastern Mediterranean.
