Winter
The Winter family’s story begins in imperial Germany and follows two brothers, Peter and Paul, through the upheavals that transform Berlin during the first half of the twentieth century. Their lives are shaped by the First World War, revolution, inflation and the unstable politics of the Weimar Republic, while family loyalties become increasingly difficult to separate from political identity.
The rise of Nazism drives the brothers onto different paths and tests friendships, marriages and ambitions that once seemed private. By carrying the family through dictatorship and the Second World War, Deighton creates the background to people and institutions that later influence the Bernard Samson novels, while also presenting a self-contained family saga of modern Germany.
