While Rome Burned moves Sertorius into the crisis of 88 BC, when the violence of the Social War overlaps with the struggle between Sulla and Marius. Sertorius wants to protect his family and return to peace, but the Republic is entering a stage in which military command, personal ambition and constitutional crisis can no longer be separated.
The novel belongs to the beginning of the Sullan crisis and the wider eastern emergency created by Mithridates VI. It shows Rome on the edge of its first civil war, with Sulla’s march on Rome and Marius’s determination to regain power turning the capital itself into an object of military contest.
