During the London Blitz, Jack and Maggie Harris lose their home and wander the damaged streets with nowhere to stay. Still grieving for the child they lost at an earlier Christmas, they take shelter for the night in a mansion that appears to have been abandoned.
Inside they find warmth, food and an unexpected child in need of protection. The meeting brings strangers together during the bombing and gives Jack and Maggie a chance to act on the compassion that grief had nearly taken from them.
