Valley Forge

During the winter of 1777–78, George Washington brings the battered Continental Army into camp at Valley Forge after the British occupation of Philadelphia. Food, clothing and equipment are desperately short, disease spreads through the encampment and political critics question whether Washington should remain in command. The survival of the army becomes as important as any battle.

Against this pressure, Washington and his officers begin the difficult work of rebuilding the force. Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben introduces systematic drill and discipline, while Lafayette and other allies help sustain the revolutionary coalition. The novel turns the famous winter encampment into a story of endurance, organisation and leadership, showing how a demoralised army emerged more cohesive and better prepared for the campaigns ahead.
