As children in Slovakia, Cibi, Magda and Livia Meller promise their father that they will remain together. When Livia is ordered to report for deportation in 1942, Cibi goes with her, while Magda hides from the authorities before she too is captured. The sisters are eventually reunited in Auschwitz-Birkenau, where hunger, forced labour, selections and violence test the promise that has bound them since childhood.
As the war ends, the sisters survive evacuation from the camp and a death march across collapsing Nazi territory. Returning to Slovakia brings new uncertainty under Communist rule and the knowledge that much of their former world has been destroyed. Their later journey to Israel becomes an attempt to build families and a future without forgetting those who were murdered.
