The White Lady

The White Lady traces two Belgian intelligence networks that supplied information to Britain under German occupation. La Dame Blanche operated during the First World War through a large clandestine structure of observers and couriers, while a later generation revived related intelligence work during the Second World War through the Clarence Service.

Drawing on declassified British and Belgian archives, Helen Fry examines recruitment, communications, railway and military observation, betrayal and the risks accepted by civilian agents. Walthère Dewé is one of the important organisers linking this tradition of Belgian resistance intelligence across the two conflicts. The book is a nonfiction institutional history rather than an espionage novel.
