During the First World War, Emily Bryce falls in love with an Australian pilot and accepts his proposal before he returns to the front. Determined to contribute to the war effort, she becomes a land girl on a Devon estate, where she discovers the journals and neglected garden of a woman who practised herbal medicine.
When Emily learns that her fiancé has died and realizes she is pregnant, she presents herself as a war widow. The journals offer a possible livelihood, but her attempts to use the remedies place her in conflict with local authority and force her to decide how to build a future for herself and her child.
