Henry Percy grows up within the martial culture of the northern marches, where raids, ransoms and family honour shape a nobleman’s life. Service in France and Scotland brings him early fame, while the costly fighting at Otterburn establishes the courage and impetuosity that earn him the name Hotspur. His loyalty to Richard II is then tested as the Percys help Henry Bolingbroke seize the English throne.
Under Henry IV, promises made to the Percy family give way to disputes over money, prisoners and power in the north. War against Owain Glyndŵr and resentment of the king draw Hotspur into a rebellion that divides his household and forces him to choose between dynastic duty and his own understanding of chivalry. The novel follows that choice towards the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403.
