Boston, 1861. Jack Lark arrives in the United States as secession turns political crisis into civil war. He enlists as a sergeant in the Union army and discovers a conflict unlike the imperial campaigns he has known: men around him are choosing to fight for causes they believe define the future of their country, while many civilians still expect the war to be settled in a single decisive clash.
Jack’s experience tells him otherwise. As the armies converge on the first great battle at Bull Run, the novel contrasts professional soldiering with the enthusiasm and confusion of newly raised forces, forcing Jack to consider whether skill in battle is enough when the reasons for fighting matter as much as the orders given.
