In April 1942, Slovak Jew Lale Sokolov is deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Because he speaks several languages, he is assigned to assist the camp’s tattooist and eventually becomes a Tätowierer, marking identification numbers on incoming prisoners. The position gives him limited movement and access to goods, which he uses to obtain food and medicine for others while navigating the constant threat of punishment and death.
While tattooing a young woman named Gita, Lale forms a connection that becomes central to both their survival. Their relationship develops amid selections, forced labour, violence and the camp’s clandestine networks of exchange and resistance. Inspired by Lale Sokolov’s recollections, the novel follows his attempt to preserve compassion and imagine a future with Gita beyond Auschwitz.
