In a Lancashire family on the eve of the First World War, brothers Charlie and Harry Davenport live beneath the authority of a respected but violent father. When Charlie becomes convinced that their vulnerable sister is being abused, a desperate act leaves the brothers carrying a secret that reshapes the family just as Britain moves towards war.
The story follows that burden from the home front into the trenches of the Western Front and the Battle of the Somme. McKay combines a fictional domestic drama with the documented mass violence of 1916, using the brothers’ different wartime paths to explore loyalty, guilt and psychological damage. The Davenports are fictional rather than portraits of particular historical individuals.
