The Sound of Thunder

South Africa during the Second Boer War. Sean Courtney enters the conflict as a veteran, landowner and businessman whose family divisions are already threatening what he has built. His sons and his brother Garrick carry rivalries into the political and military crisis. The Second Boer War turns earlier commercial and personal rivalries into questions of military allegiance, citizenship and survival under occupation.

British and Boer loyalties divide households as the war moves through Natal and the Transvaal. Sean’s relationship with Ruth Friedman offers a new future but also gives his enemies a means to attack him during the uncertain peace that follows. The peace that follows does not resolve those divisions, and Sean must rebuild authority in a society where British victory has not erased Afrikaner identity or resentment.
