Olav and Ingunn return as husband and wife to Hestviken, the ancestral estate he has struggled to recover. Material security does not free them from the years of separation, violence and secrecy that preceded the marriage. Ingunn’s health remains fragile, children are born and lost, and Eirik’s concealed parentage becomes part of the household’s unspoken structure. Olav proves capable as a landowner, yet his inability to confess Teit Hallsson’s murder isolates him from both Ingunn and the sacramental life of the Church.

The novel concentrates on the slow damage caused by guilt rather than on a single public catastrophe. Olav’s affection, pride and resentment coexist as he tries to protect a wife who cannot recover the vitality of her youth, while temptation and inherited patterns of vengeance continue around the estate. Ingunn’s decline and death leave Olav wealthy and respected but inwardly trapped, with the secret preserved and the children left to grow within a family whose central act of violence has never been acknowledged.
