In 1939 Harry Clifton joins the Merchant Navy and sails across the Atlantic, attempting to leave behind the dispute over his identity and his forbidden relationship with Emma Barrington. When his ship is sunk by a German U-boat, he survives alongside an American officer, Tom Bradshaw. Bradshaw dies during the rescue, and Harry assumes his name in the hope of beginning again in the United States.
The borrowed identity instead leads to arrest and imprisonment for a crime committed by the dead man. While Harry tries to prove who he is from inside an American prison, Emma refuses to accept reports of his death and crosses the Atlantic in search of him. Giles Barrington enters military service, and the unresolved inheritance of the Barrington estate remains entangled with the private consequences of the Battle of the Atlantic.
