In 1968, obituary writer Liz Houghton sees a missing child case as her chance to become a reporter. She follows her police-officer friend Marisa to Dorset, where the search recalls three girls who disappeared after being evacuated from London during the Blitz; one was murdered and two were never found.
Liz’s investigation leads to the abandoned village of Tydeham, requisitioned by the military during the war. As she traces the wartime children and the present disappearance, she discovers a personal connection to the ruined village and a secret that has survived for more than twenty years.
