Edmund “Ned” Mowbray reaches court at thirteen after being abandoned by the parents and relatives who should have protected him. Service beside Prince Harry gives him his first stable friendship and a place in the Lancastrian household. Anonymous letters then claim that Ned possesses a better right to the crown, encouraging him to imagine that neglect has concealed a royal inheritance rather than simple family shame.
Campaigning in Wales gives Ned direct experience of Prince Harry’s courage, discipline and obligations as heir to Henry IV. At the same time, a French aunt cultivates his ambition and asks whether affection should outweigh blood and title. The novel treats Ned’s imagined claim as a counterfactual threat inside the Welsh war, forcing him to choose between the only friend who has trusted him and a kingship offered through manipulation.
