The Mucker
Billy Byrne grows up amid the violence and poverty of Chicago and initially prides himself on being a hard, antisocial “mucker.” A sequence of crimes, flight and a sea voyage carries him far from the city, where shipwreck, danger and his relationship with Barbara Harding force him to reassess the man he has become.
Billy's story begins in the social divisions of Progressive Era Chicago and then expands into the maritime world of the years before the First World War. The contrast between urban poverty, inherited privilege and survival far from home gives his transformation from street tough to dependable ally much of its force.
