The Mother

An unnamed peasant woman works beside her husband, raises their children and cares for his elderly mother in a village where survival depends on the land and on reputation. When her restless husband abandons the household, she conceals the desertion by inventing journeys and sending herself letters in his name. The deception protects the family from immediate shame but leaves her carrying every burden that marriage was supposed to divide.

Seasons of labour, pregnancy, debt and hunger narrow her choices as the children grow into lives she cannot control. Her endurance is neither sentimental nor passive: she bargains, lies, sacrifices and sometimes hardens herself because no institution offers security to a deserted rural woman. Set in the final years of imperial China, the novel presents motherhood as physical work and social strategy within a world governed by poverty, patriarchy and the need to preserve face.
