Uhtred, heir to the fortress of Bebbanburg, is captured as a child when the Great Heathen Army destroys the Northumbrian forces. Raised in the household of the Danish warrior Ragnar, he learns the language, religion and fighting culture of the invaders while retaining a claim to his Saxon inheritance.
When Danish armies overwhelm most of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Uhtred is drawn towards the surviving kingdom of Wessex and Alfred the Great. His divided loyalties place him between the people who raised him and the kingdom that may help him recover Bebbanburg.
