The novel begins in 1948 as the newly declared State of Israel confronts invasion, shortages and the struggle to keep Jerusalem supplied. Zev Barak, Sam Pasternak, Benny Luria and the refugee soldier known as Don Kishote enter the conflict through different branches of the armed forces and intelligence services. Their careers and relationships develop alongside Israel’s improvised defence, internal political disputes and uncertain foreign support.

The narrative follows the officers and the women they love through the War of Independence, the Suez Crisis and the Six-Day War of 1967. Fictional lives intersect with David Ben-Gurion, Moshe Dayan, Golda Meir and other public figures, allowing military operations, diplomacy and nation-building to be viewed from both official and domestic perspectives. The result is a historical saga about survival, ambition and the personal demands made by permanent mobilisation.
