Pregnant and expected to remain at home, Molly receives a letter addressed to her former detective agency asking her to find a missing Irish servant. On the same day she learns that several babies have disappeared in New York, but Daniel refuses to let her assist with the police inquiry.
Sent to stay with Daniel’s mother, Molly continues investigating both cases and discovers that the missing maid may connect wealthy families with the stolen children. Her search takes her through institutions and private homes where unmarried mothers and infants can vanish without official concern.
