The Enemy’s Wife
Shanghai, 1941. Zofia has built a life with her Japanese husband Haru, but his conscription into the Imperial Japanese Army leaves her isolated as the city comes under tighter wartime control. She forms a close bond with Hilly, a young refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria, while her American employer Theo offers another connection to a world that is rapidly disappearing.
As occupation hardens and violence enters everyday life, Zofia must confront what Haru’s uniform means for their marriage and what survival requires of those without secure nationality or protection. The novel follows the emotional consequences of war across cultures, placing a love story inside the Japanese occupation of Shanghai and the broader conflict in China and the Pacific.
