The City of Echoes

Rome, May 1944. The German occupation is weakening as Allied forces advance, but the Vatican escape line remains exposed to raids, informers and the increasingly desperate Gestapo. John May continues moving escaped prisoners towards safety when the Choir learns that a strongbox of Nazi money has been hijacked. Recovering it could finance the network, but the cash is now controlled by a Roman criminal whose reputation makes negotiation almost as dangerous as capture.

May is sent into the city’s underworld while Paul Hauptmann intensifies his pursuit of the escape-line activists. Rumour, hunger and fear distort every alliance, and the approaching liberation offers no guarantee that the Choir will survive long enough to see it. The concluding volume brings the network’s wartime story to May 1944, joining resistance thriller and crime narrative as private courage collides with organised violence in the final weeks of occupied Rome.
