In 1965, Australian writer Emma Callander is hired to complete the final mystery novel of the celebrated but failing author Iris Blackburn. Iris sends Emma to the Isle of Skye to research a supposed fictional case involving a couple who drowned in 1904 and a young woman known as the Wild Girl who disappeared soon afterwards.

Emma discovers that Iris’s story is based on an unsolved crime connected to a powerful local family. Working with Iris’s lawyer, Tony Gordon, she searches the castle and surviving records while descendants of those involved attempt to keep the truth buried.
