Inverness, 1752. Iain MacGillivray survived the Battle of Culloden by lying among the Jacobite dead and now keeps a bookshop while government forces continue to suppress Highland resistance. A stranger searches the shelves without explaining what he wants, then is found in the shop with his throat cut and a Jacobite sword placed beside him.
The staged evidence threatens to draw Iain back into the defeated cause and makes his customers, family and former comrades possible suspects. His attempt to identify the stranger uncovers forbidden names, divided loyalties and old scores left unsettled by the rising, while the authorities remain ready to treat any secrecy as renewed rebellion.
